The Yellow Belly Turtle How To Care For It And Other Pet Aquatic Turtles

If you have an interest in reptiles, aquatic turtles can make great pets. When my family decided to add a Yellow Bellied and a Red Belly turtle to our household in 2010, it wasn't a hasty decision. We took weeks to prepare and eventually got our pets settled in. Despite initial worries, we found that caring for our Yellow Belly turtle wasn't as challenging as we expected. Here are some tips for first-time owners.

How much space do my pet turtles need?

Red Belly and Yellow Belly slider turtles can grow up to 14 inches in length. When you bring them home, they'll likely be just a few inches long. At this stage, a ten-gallon tank is sufficient. As adults, however, they will require an environment of at least 45 gallons.

What water level is appropriate?

Pet turtles love to swim, contrary to what some may believe. Our Yellow Belly turtle certainly does. After setting up your pet turtle tank, ensure that the water level is no more than three to four inches from the top of the tank. This is something I didn't know when we first got our Yellow Belly turtle.

What decorations should I add to the aquarium?

Our Yellow Belly turtle enjoys chewing on its surroundings, particularly plants. If you value your aquatic plants, consider using artificial ones. Additionally, your Yellow Bellied turtle will need places to rest and bask. You can add makeshift platforms or floating apparatus to your turtle aquarium, but don't overcrowd it. Remember that your turtle already has to carry around a bulky shell.

How much should I feed my turtles?

We don't feed our Yellow Bellied turtle generic green floating sticks, and we don't recommend that you do either. Our preferred food is Zoo Med's Gourmet Aquatic Turtle Food. Look for this product specifically, as it provides a well-rounded diet that includes ingredients such as dried shrimp, mealworms, fish, and even cranberries. This medley also contains calcium, but it's a good idea to buy an extra calcium tablet to help prevent the softening of their shells. Avoid overfeeding your aquatic turtles.
